Defragging DOES helps. Good Idea.
I am sure it is due to the internet here, but it really gets slow.

Not sure what kind of connection your have, sometimes what helps me is to power down the modem and PC, power up modem, then restart PC.
Also call your carrier and tell then your are having speed problems.
Also you can go to: http://www.speedtest.net/
to test your speed, they can also check your system and set for best performance.
I do it from time to time. Sometimes your carrier changes the connect points and puts you on a slow connect point.
I build my own PC's, install software and more, so that would be my advice.
Also keep in mind sometimes your carrier likes to down grade your speed. AT&T is good for that.
I use ComCAST.
